The British Ports Association has published an additional 100 case studies and success stories in an expanded sustainability directory, showcasing the actions the industry is taking to protect and enhance the environment across the UK. The entries range from small energy efficiency improvements to multi-million-pound projects, illustrating the breadth of work undertaken by ports to support their sustainability goals and demonstrating the UK ports’ ongoing commitment in this area.
The new case studies are from the last five years and cover the length and breadth of the UK. Ports of all shapes, sizes and ownership structure are included. The BPA has launched a call for more case studies that will be showcased at the Association’s flagship Annual Lunch at the Guildhall in London on 13 May.
For the first time, projects supported by the Department for Transports clean maritime competition have been included, demonstrating how government support has helped accelerate innovative work decarbonising port operations. Read more in our Sustainability Directory.
This incredible list of projects joins the 100 examples we first published five years ago. In that time we’ve seen a step change in the pace of electrification and decarbonisation projects. Whilst clean maritime funding from the DfT has helped drive innovation in this area, the sector has gone further and is investing millions in reducing emissions to improve air quality and meet ambitious industry targets. There is also a huge amount of work in conserving and enhancing habitats and biodiversity.
There’s still lots to do and this collection of stories is just a sample of the good work ports are doing. We will be adding more over time and hope it inspires ports as well as showcasing positive action to policymakers and industry stakeholders.
