Lerwick Port Authority’s £16.95M quay construction project at Mair’s Quay included the addition of new shore power points to service the fishing fleet.
Unique to Lerwick, is having six high capacity connections with the versatility to service multiple vessels simultaneously.
The new generation of pelagic vessels can now plug into shore power points for their power needs at berth (lights, pumps, communications, refrigeration) instead of running diesel fuelled auxiliary on-board engines or generators. Resultant benefits include reduction in fossil fuel use and significantly reduced air emissions whilst in port. Future planning includes expanding shore power options to other commercial vessels.
