Like much that is innovative in Whitstable, the harbour, constructed in 1831, was the first in the world to be served by a railway. It is still a busy working harbour today, with shipping, fishing, wind farm maintenance and Brett Aggregates.
Situated at the heart of the quirky, bustling town, the harbour is close to the railway station, bus routes and car parks. Approaching it by sea, it is to the east of the Swale.
Leisure and sporting activities flourish on and around the harbour with the sea scouts, Yacht Club, anglers, kite and wind-surfers, sea trips in the 119 year old Thames barge, Greta, and local produce to sample with Whitstable oysters, shellfish, the local catch, cafés, restaurants and markets. Also the RNLI is based at the harbour.
