UK Ports are developing Port Air Quality Strategies designed to reduce air pollutant emissions within ports. The industry has worked closely with Government on what these could cover.

The UK Government issued guidance to major ports in England in 2019 that recognised the diverse range of circumstances, challenges and opportunities to ports in seeking to reduce emissions.

Ports are working to produce emissions inventories, based on modelling, monitoring, or both before putting in place actions designed to reduce pollutant emissions.
Port machinery themselves make sup 0.2-0.3% of total NOx emissions in a city with a very large port, according to industry research. Nevertheless, ports are exploring how they can help shipping reduce their emissions through a number of initiatives, whilst recognising that moving freight by water remains the most efficient mode of transport. “
