Belfast: smart lighting and electricity

Belfast Harbour has been undergoing a light replacement scheme on both quays and throughout the 30km of estate roads. This project is now 75% complete which is realising a 50% reduction in their lighting energy consumption.

In recent years Belfast Harbour has been undergoing a light replacement scheme on both quays and throughout the 30km of estate roads. This project is now 75% complete which is realising a 50% reduction in their lighting energy consumption.

In recent months, Belfast Harbour has also installed more than 40 smart electricity meters across the estate. These meters record a reading every 30 minutes allowing organisations to analyse their usage and if necessary make changes to be both more energy efficient and save money. They believe change comes through knowledge and this use of the latest technology empowers their customers by giving them better information.

Belfast Harbour has also established a consortium of SMEs responsible for conceptualising a smart energy district, which will take place in 2020 and has backing of NI Electricity and Belfast City Council exploring new initiatives to de-carbonise their energy.
