BPA & Burness Paul Mock Trial Workshop

  • Date:
    4 July 2024
  • Venue:
    Microsoft Teams

Inspired by a real civil claim which made its way through the courts in Scotland, Burnness Paull’s Mock Trial Workshop follows the story of an employee injured in a during a manual handling operation. The employer denies liability and a court action is raised.

The workshop contains animated court room drama, with witnesses being examined and cross-examined before the final judgment is pronounced. The workshop will analyse the documents used in the court room and discuss the practical ways in which the defence could be improved. Attendees will also have a chance to vote on prospects of success as the evidence unfolds.

This workshop is an innovative way for port professionals to better understand the court process and will suit a number of varied roles within a port, including:

  • Any port management position, particularly in smaller ports
  • Those with decision-making powers as to how a litigation is conducted
  • HR, legal, and safety professionals

Attending the workshop will help:

  • Increase awareness of the processes of gathering and recording evidence and conducting investigations
  • Give attendees an insight into what it’s like giving evidence in court (without any excruciating role play)
  • Demonstrate the importance of robust documentation and implementation of policies and procedures and how they will be scrutinised in court
  • Assist in the analysis of a liability claim and the prospects of success in court
  • Improve future claims defensibility
